Preparation:
You want to make sure your nails are fully prepared and in the best care before you pain them because you don't want to stain or damage your nails.
- Make sure to remove old polish. To make sure to remove all of it use a nail polish remover and some cotton wool. Costly: http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod1320238 This polish remover at $6 is great. It removes even the blackest of polishes quickly and well. Cheap: http://www.boots.com/en/Cutex-Strengthening-Nail-Polish-Remover-100ml_1047610/ I personally love this remover, i use it all the time. I find that it really does strengthen your nails.
- Make sure your cuticles are pushed back. You can even buy cuticle oil however you don't need to do this as it's not necessary.
- Make sure you file your nails. To get the best finish file all your nails to the desired shape.
- Apply a base coat. Base coats are a must have. Costly: http://www.essie.co.uk/Nail-Care/base-coat.aspx at £9 it is in the upper end of base coats for nails. Essie is a very good brand and is very good quality. In the base coat range, there is an option for growing faster, stronger, plain base coat or an all in one. I recommend the £9 all in one, because it has all the qualities to keep your nails healthy. Remember to always use a base coat because otherwise you will stain your nails which will take a while to remove. Cheap: http://www.boots.com/en/Miss-Sporty-Nail-Expert-Base-Glossy-Top-Coat_1416227/ Miss sporty base coat seems very good at what a base coat should do. Unlike the Essie, it doesn't help to strengthen nails or anything like the Essie ones do, however it is a basic base coat. Also a good thing about this product is it also doubles up as a top coat.
- Apply a top coat. After letting the design dry on your nails, you must use a top coat on top to seal your design and stop it from chipping.
Penguin:
The penguin nail is popular design in the winter, but if you choose the right colors, it makes for a perfect design all year round.
Step 1:
Apply a basic color to all of your nails. Blue is a recommended color but you could also use pink or yellow or any color really. You could even use a multiple array of base colors to cover your nails. As in maybe you could do your thumbs green, and your pinkies blue etc. When i did this i used the Mint Candy Apple by Essie. I just applied two quick coats of the basic blue color and let it dry thoroughly.
Step 2:
I then used the White tips from the manicure kit by sally Hansen to paint down the middle a little curved edge rectangle. I would recommend making the white almost the length of the nail, leaving a gap at the top with the cuticle. I let that dry straight away.
Step 3:
I then take a bobby pin and bend it straight and create a kind of dotting tool. You can buy dotting tools but bobby pins work just as well. I used the Barry M Black nail polish. i placed the bobby pin in so that the end was covered with black polish then i dotted two black dots at the top of the white near the cuticle to make the eyes.
Step 4:
Then, i would take the sally Hansen nail art pen in orange and draw a very small line across just below the two black dots.
step 5:
I then went and took the other end of the bobby pin and dipped it into the orange Essie nail polish in clam bake. I painted then two dots at the other end of the nail to make the feet then let it all dry.
Once that has all dried apply a top coat.
Disney:
This is a very mickey and Minnie mouse themed nail art. For this one you will need a dotting tool.
Step 1:
Paint your thumb, index, middle and pinky finger on each hand a deep red. I would recommend the OPI red however there are many more red nail paints that are cheaper. On your ring finger paint it white. I would recommend the Barry M white.
Step 2:
On all of the red nails take the white Barry M nail paint and the dotting tool and place medium sized dots on all of them.
Step 3:
On the white nails take your dotting tool and place the medium sized black dots on the nail.
Step 4:
Take a smaller dotting tool and on either size of the black dots place a small red dot using the opi nail paint.
Finish with a top coat after it is all dry.
French manicure (Revamped)
This design is only going to focus on the white on your nail so this would mainly work on long nails.
Step 1:
Find a very nude light nail polish that is quite translucent and place on coat on every nail so it still appears natural. I would suggest the Barry M nude paint.
Step 2:
I then chose 5 colors that are quite bright. I would suggest choosing five Essie nail polishes as they have a vast array of colors. Only place it on the white of the nail. If you don't feel like you can get it on the white of your nail straight. Once the nude color dries stick on a french manicure sticker to the end of the pink where the white meets and paint then.
Apply a top coat once everything has dried.
